Alexis was hot and tired. With rage in her voice she shouted, “Pull me up! I give up, I hate this. This is stupid!” It was at that moment when Jason, the adviser on the trip, looked at me and said, “Ed, I'm going to go down and talk with her.” I then shouted down to Alexis, “Hold on! You can do this. We know you can!”

Jason grasped another rope, put his climbing harness(系带)on and began to repel down the cliff. Within moments Jason was beside Alexis. She had her cheek directly against the face of the rock with her feet barely resting on a small piece of the cliff that jetted outward. Jason said to Alexis, “I know that you have been on this cliff now for what seems like a long time. Your feet and fingers are cramping(痉挛)up and your forearms feel as though they are on fire. But, Alexis, you are strong, look how far up you are already. You have taken one of the more difficult paths up the cliff. Look Alexis, look at the path you have taken.”

At that moment, Alexis moved her cheek away from the rock face and looked down. The bright white chalk she used on her hands to give her a better hold, showed the path where her tired hands had moved her upward on the cliff. Jason was right. Alexis had taken the hardest way up the cliff. Jason then looked straight into Alexis' eyes and in a calm voice he said, “You are not alone out here, there are People who care about you, who want to help you and see you succeed. We are going to do this together. Are you ready?” Slowly she shook her head yes and took a deep breath.

Let's face one drinks diet sodas for the le drink diet sodas in the hope that it will help them lose weight or at least keep them from gaining it seems to have exactly the opposite effect, according to a new study.

Researchers from the University of Texas said those who drank two or more diet sodas
a day had waist size increases that were six times greater than those who didn't drink diet sodas.“What we saw was that the more diet sodas a person drank, the more weight they were likely to gain,”said Sharon Fowler.

The study was based on data from 474 participants in a large, ongoing research project, where the participants were followed for nearly 10 years.

While the findings are surprising, they also offer some explanations.

Nutrition expert,Melanie Rogers, who works with overweight patients in New York, has found that when patients are switched from regular to diet sodas, they don't lose weight at all.“We weren't seeing weight loss necessarily, and that was confusing to us,”said Rogers.

So why would diet soda cause weight gain?No one knows for sure yet,but it could be that people think they can eat more if they drink diet sodas, and so over-compensate for the missing calories.

A related study found some sweeteners (甜味剂)raised blood sugar levels in some mice.“Data from this and other potential studies suggest that the promotion of diet sodas and artificial sweeteners may be risky,”said Helen da,professor at School of Medicine of the University of Texas.“They may be free of calories, but not of consequences.”

How Many Lies Do the Children Tell You?

Mothers who feel their children don't appreciate them can add another grievance to the list half the time, their children are lying to them. A study designed to expose the truth about lying shows that undergraduates lie to their mothers in 46% of their conversations. Still, mums should feel better than total strangers, who are told lies an astonishing 77% of the time.

Bella Depaulo and a team of psychologists from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, asked 77 undergraduates to keep a record of all their conversations for a week, and write down whether they lied at any time. DePaulo named lying broadly, as “when you intentionally try to mislead someone”, so she would catch the smallest of lies.

The students told an average of two lies a day. They said they had been studying when they had been out drinking. One told his parents that a textbook cost $50 rather than $20 so that they would send him extra money. Female students constantly told their plainlooking roommates that they were pretty. “They are everyday lies,” says DePaulo.

DePaulo and her colleagues conclude that people tend to tell fewer lies to those they feel closest to. College students lied to their best friends 28% of the time but lied to acquaintances 48% of the time. In close relationships, people were more likely to tell “kindhearted” lies, designed to protect feelings, rather than selfserving lies.

Romantic(浪漫的) partners lie somewhere between close friends and acquaintances. Students lied to romantic partners about a third of the time. DePaulo thinks that unmarried lovers can expect less honesty than best friends because of the insecurity that comes with romance.

Mothers can take heart from one other finding. They may have been lied to, but at least their children talked to them. The students were recorded telling few lies to their fathers because they had little interaction with them.

I write this letter to you to draw your attention to my complaint about your service. A few days ago, I joined a three-days trip to E-mei Mountain in your travel agency. I found a little differences between your advertisement and action. As you say, you will provide a large air-conditioned bus, but we only rode in a shabby bus with any air conditioner. Yes, you served us lunch, and the food tasted terribly and some even with sand. We didn’t enjoy any kind of shower. In fact, we only bathe in cold water. We do hope something can done to prevent such things happen again.

第一节 完型填空(共40分):

41-45 CBABC 46-50 ACBBA

51-55 DBABA 56-60 DDABB

第二节 语法填空(共15分):

 what 引导宾语从句,在从句中作宾语。

 so far 与现在完成时连用。

 not as/so+形容词原级+as 不如……。

 be to do 要做某事。

65.a such a/an+形容词+单数名词。

 该空表转折,故用 but。

ing when it comes to doing sth. 当谈及……时。

 one's lack of 缺乏……。

 先行词被 all 修饰,定语从句用 that 引导。

essful 形容词作定语。

第四部分 写作(共35分)

第一节 短文改错(共10分):

e-days→three-day。考查复合形容词的用法。文中… joined a three-days trip to E-mei Mountain…里的three-days是复合形容词,其由“基数词+连字符+名词单数”来构成,作定语,修饰名词trip。

le→few 。考查同义词的辨析。文中…found a little differences between…里的differences是可数名词的复数形式,故其前few作定语,起限定作用。而little则与不可数名词的单数形式连用。

→without/any→no。考查逻辑关系。文中已经讲明了游客坐的是没有装空调的车子,并且车况很差。所以,此处应用否定意义的词来表述。

→but。考查逻辑关系。作者反映尽管旅行社在午饭时提供了饭菜,但是质量很差,而且还有沙粒。所以,此处语义应为转折关系。

ibly→terrible。考查副词的误用。句子…the food tasted terribly中的terribly是副词,
作状语。而此处应用其形容词terrible,置于系动词tasted后作表语,才符合词法要求 。

e→bathed。考查动词时态的辨别。句子In fact, we only bathe in cold water中的谓语动词bathe应与全文背景时间保持一致,须用一般过去时。

→which。考查非限制性定语从句的用法。从句子结构来看,句子…the guide took us to several expensive souvenir shops, what wasted us much time句中的souvenir shops,其后跟了一个非限制性定语从句来起补充或说明作用,因先行词指物,应用关系代词which来引导。而what则与定语从句无关。

→a。考查固定习语的用法。句子As the result, two scenery spots were finally left unseen中的固定搭配as a result用作插入语,表示 结果,其中冠词为a。

9. can后加be。考查情态动词被动语态的用法。句子We do hope something can done to prevent…中的something是动词do的承受对象,应用被动语态。同时,其谓语中有情态动词can,故正确表达式应为:can be done。

en→happening。考查特殊句式的用法。句子…to prevent such things happen again中的prevent句型搭配应为prevent…from doing something或prevent… doing something,故应用happening。

第二节 书面表达(共25分):

One Possible Version

As a senior school student, I hold the view that life here is interesting and colorful.

Why do I say like this? In our spare time, we always take an active part in sports so that we can build up our body, which will surely benefit our further study. As a grade 2 student, we also study hard to make sure that one day our dream of entering a key university can be realized.

Although sometimes life here is boring and challenging. I never regret having made such a choice. I’m sure that in the future we’ll feel proud of ourselves if we look back on our lives today.

I work with Volunteers for Wildlife, a rescue and education organization at Bailey Arboretum in Locust Valley. Trying to help injured, displaced or sick creatures can be heartbreaking; survival is never certain. However, when it works, it is simply beautiful.

I got a rescue call from a woman in Muttontown. She had found a young owl(猫头鹰) on the ground. When I arrived, I saw a 2-to 3-week-old owl. It had already been placed in a carrier for safety.

I examined the chick(雏鸟) and it seemed fine. If I could locate the nest, I might have been able to put it back, but no luck. My next work was to construct a nest and anchor it in a tree.

The homeowner was very helpful. A wire basket was found. I put some pine branches into the basket to make this nest safe and comfortable. I placed the chick in the nest, and it quickly calmed down.

Now all that was needed were the parents, but they were absent. I gave the homeowner a recording of the hunger screams of owl chicks. These advertise the presence of chicks to adults; they might also encourage our chick to start calling as well. I gave the owner as much information as possible and headed home to see what news the night might bring.

A nervous night to be sure, but sometimes the spirits of nature smile on us all! The homeowner called to say that the parents had responded to the recordings. I drove over and saw the chick in the nest looking healthy and active. And it was accompanied in the nest by zxxk the greatest sight of all — LUNCH! The parents had done their duty and would probably continue to do so.

Some of the world’s most famous musicians recently gathered in Paris and New Orleans to celebrate the first annual International Jazz Day. UNESCO( United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) recently set April 30 as a day to raise awareness of jazz music, its significance, and its potential as a unifying(联合) voice across cultures.

Despite the celebrations, though, in the U.S. the jazz audience continues to shrink and grow older, and the music has failed to connect with younger generations.

It’s Jason Moran’s job to help change that. As the Kennedy Center’s artistic adviser for jazz, Moran hopes to widen the audience for jazz, make the music more accessible, and preserve its history and culture.

“Jazz seems like it’s not really a part of the American appetite,” Moran tells National Public Radio’s reporter Neal Conan. “What I’m hoping to accomplish is that my generation and younger start to reconsider and understand that jazz is not black and write anymore. It’s actually color, and it’s actually digital.”

Moran says one of the problems with jazz today is that the entertainment aspect of the music has been lost. “The music can’t be presented today the way it was in 1908 or 1958. It has to continue to move, because the way the world works is not the same,” says Moran.

Last year, Moran worked on a project that arranged Fats Waller’s music for a dance party, “Just to kind of put it back in the mind that Waller is dance music as much as it is concert music,” says Moran. “For me, it’s the recontextualization. In music, where does the emotion(情感) lie? Are we, as humans, gaining any insight(感悟) on how to talk about ourselves and how something as abstract as a Charlie Parker record gets us into a dialogue about our emotions and our thoughts? Sometimes we lose sight that the music has a wider context,” says Moran, “so I want to continue those dialogues. Those are the things I want to foster.”

A buld-it-yourself solar still(蒸馏器) is one of the best ways to obtain drinking water in areas where the liquid is not readily available. Developed by two doctors in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, it’s an excellent water collector. Unfortunately, you must carry the necessary equipment with you, since it’s all but impossible to find natural substitutes. The only components required, though, are a 5' 5' sheet of clear or slightly milky plastic, six feet of plastic tube, and a container— perhaps just a drinking cup — to catch the water. These pieces can be folded into a neat little pack and fastened on your belt.

To construct a working still, use a sharp stick or rock to dig a hole four feet across and three feet deep. Try to make the hole in a damp area to increase the water catcher’s productivity. Place your cup in the deepest part of the hole. Then lay the tube in place so that one end rests all the way in the cup and the rest of the line runs up — and out — the side of the hole.

Next, cover the hole with the plastic sheet, securing the edges of the plastic with dirt and weighting the sheet’s center down with a rock. The plastic should now form a cone(圆锥体) with 45-degree-angled sides. The low point of the sheet must be centered directly over, and no more than three inches above, the cup.

The solar still works by creating a greenhouse under the plastic. Ground water evaporates (蒸发) and collects on the sheet until small drops of water form, run down the material and fall off into the cup. When the container is full, you can suck the refreshment zxxk out through the tube, and won’t have to break down the still every time you need a drink.

32. What do we know about the solar still equipment from the first paragraph?

A. It’s delicate. B. It’s expensive.

C. It’s complex. D. It’s portable.

33. What does the underlined phrase “the water catcher” in paragraph 2 refer to?

A. The tube. B. The still.

C. The hole. D. The cup.

34. What’s the last step of constructing a working solar still?

A. Dig a hole of a certain size. B. Put the cup in place.

C. Weight the sheet’s center down. D. Cover the hole with the plastic sheet.

35. When a solar still works, drops of water come into the cup form .

A. the plastic tube B. outside the hole

C. the open air D. beneath the sheet

If anyone had told me three years ago that I would be spending most of my weekends camping. I would have laughed heartily. Campers, in my eyes, were people who enjoyed insect bites, ill-cooked meals, and uncomfortable sleeping bags. They had nothing in common with me. 36 .

The friends who introduced me to camping thought that it meant to be a pioneer. 37 We sleep in a tent, cooked over an open fire, and walked a long distance to take the shower and use the bathroom. This brief visit with Mother Nature cost me two days off from work, recovering from a bad case of sunburn and the doctor’s bill for my son’s food poisoning.

I was, nevertheless, talked into going on another fun-filled holiday in the wilderness. 38 Instead, we had a pop-up camper with comfortable beds and an air conditioner. My nature-loving friends had remembered to bring all the necessities of life.

39 We have done a lot of it since. Recently, we bought a twenty-eight-foot travel trailer complete with a bathroom and a built-in TV set. There is a separate bedroom, a modern kitchen with a refrigerator. The trailer even has matching carpet and curtains.

40 It must be true that sooner or later, everyone finds his or her way back to nature. I recommend that you find your way in style.

In the summer holiday following my eighteen birthday, I took driving lessons. I still remember how hard first day was. Before getting into the car, I thought I had learned the instructor’s orders, so once I started the car, my mind goes blank. I forgot what he had said to me altogether. The instructor kept repeating the word, “Speed up!” “Slow down!” “Turning left!” I was so much nervous that I could hardly tell which direction was left.
