The US Supreme Court will allow a controversial ban imposed by the Trump administration on travellers from certain countries to take effect while legal challenges continue.

Two of the high court’s nine judges, Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayer dissented from the order on Monday evening, which will put on hold a lower-court decision that stopped the ban from being fully implemented.

An earlier version of the travel ban was written and issued within weeks of US President Donald Trump taking office, pertaining to travellers from six Muslim-majority countries.

Amid several legal challenges, however, the travel ban has been rewritten and tailored in recent months to impose restrictions on travellers from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria, Yemen, Chad, North Korea and Venezuela.

While civil rights activists have condemned the measure, supporters say it is necessary to allow sufficient vetting to protect national security.

Monday’s order will stay in effect while two appeals challenging the ban move forward.
