Drinking two and a half pints a day cuts your life expectancy by five years, a study has found. British scientists have carried out a large study of drinkers to work out the affect of an extra drink or two. They compared around current drinkers in 19 countries worldwide and found every drink above UK guidelines costs 15 minutes of life.

Just one-and-a-half pints of lager or 175ml glasses of wine a day - or 10 a week - was found to cut life expectancy by between 1-2 years. This was calculated for a 40 year old who continued to drink this amount for life. Having 18 drinks or more per week - on average two and a half drinks a day - was linked with 4-5 years shorter life expectancy.

The average Briton downs more than two drinks a day. Lead author Dr Angela Wood, from the University of Cambridge, said: "The key message of this research is that, if you already drink alcohol, drinking less may help you live longer and lower your risk of several cardiovascular conditions."

Researchers looked at data from 81 studies involving 599,912 participants spanning 50 years between 1964 and 2013. During this time 40,310 died and 39,018 developed cardiovascular disease. The study, published in the Lancet and part-funded by the British Heart Foundation, challenges other research suggesting moderate drinking is beneficial to heart health. The authors supported Britain's recently lowered guidelines which were criticised for being too draconian.

Since 2016 the UK recommends men and women should not drink more than 14 units of alcohol a week. This equates to around six pints of beer or six glasses of wine a week - less than one a day. Prof David Spiegelhalter, of the University of Cambridge, said: "This is a massive and very impressive study."
