Page 6 AN AMAZING ACHIEVEMENT

Barry Minto (B) has just made a successful climb of Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa. Listen to him being interviewed on the radio by Joan (J).

JOAN: Barry, welcome to our 1. and congratulations on that great climb!

BARRY: Thank you. It’s good to be here.

JOAN: Now, Barry, it was a very special climb, wasn’t it?

BARRY: Yes, that’s right. Half of the group had very bad eyesight or were2.________ like me, and the other half were sighted people who came along to help us.

JOAN: How old were the climbers?

Sara, who is blind, has just returned home from a guide dog school where she learned how to work with her new guide dog, Lucy. A teacher from the school has come to Sara’s house to teach her and Lucy how to find their way around their own town.

Part 1

SARA: Mum, this is Phil. Phil, this is my mother.

PHIL:1. ________ to meet you, Mrs Robinson.

MOTHER: Please, call me Jane.

PHIL: Umm, right, Jane. Sara’s told me a lot about you.

MOTHER: Only good things, I hope.

PHIL: Definitely. She told me how much you’ve helped her since her accident.

MOTHER: Well, I’ve done my best, but I know Sara wants to be more 2. ________.

PHIL: Well, with Lucy’s help she will be. How’s Lucy 3. ________ in, by the way?

MOTHER: Wonderful! Clever girl, Lucy. How did she go

crossing the street?

Good afternoon, everyone. Today I’d like to tell you about Louis Braille. He made it possible for blind people to read and write.

Louis was born in 1. ________ in 1809. Sadly when he was a little boy, he had an accident. By the time he was four years old, he was 2. ________ blind. However, at the age of ten Louis was lucky enough to go to Paris to one of the first schools for blind children in Pairs. At this particular school they had special books. They were written in ordinary French but the letters were raised up off the page, so that the students could feel the shape of the words and read them. But there were two problems with this system. First, the letters were huge and difficult to read. Second, the books were very expensive so the school library only had fourteen altogether. Louis, who was very clever and 3. ________, thought of a better way to 4. ________ books for blind people to read.

In 1982, when Louis was twelve years old, a soldier came to his school. This man had 5. ________ a system for soldiers to send and 6. ________ messages in the dark. Although this idea had not worked very well, Louis became very excited and began experimenting with it. By the time he was fifteen, he had invented a system which used only six dots.
