In the mid-1950s. I was somewhat bored early-adolescent make student who believed that doing any more than necessary was warred effort. One day, this approach threw me into embarrassment.

In Mrs. Totten's eighth-grade math class at Central Avenue School in Anderson. Indiana, we were learning to add and subtract decimals (小数).

Our teacher typically assigned daily homework, which would be recited in class the following day. On most days, our grades were based on our oral answer to homework questions.

Mrs. Totten usually walked up and down the rows of desks requesting answers from student after student in the order the questions had appeared on our homework sheets. She would flan either at the front or theback of the classroom and work toward the other end.

Since I was scared near the middle of about 35 students, it was easy to figure out which questions I mighthave to answer. This particular time. I had completed my usual two or three problems according to mycalculations.

What I failed to expect was that several students were absent, which threw off my estimate. As Mrs. Tottersmade her way from the beginning of the class. I desperately tried to determine which math problem I would get.I tried to work it out before she got to me, but I had brain freeze and couldn't function.

When Mrs. Totten reached my desk, she asked what answer I'd got for problem No. 14. "I…I didn't getanything,” I answered, and my face felt warm

“Correct. "she said.

It turned out that the correct answer was zero.

What did I learn that day? First, always do all your homework. Second, in real life it isn't always what yousay but how you say it that matters. Third. I would never make it as a mathematician.

If I could choose one school day that taught me the most, it would be that one.

Should we allow modem buildings to be built nest to older buildings in a historic area of a city ? In order to answer this question, we must firs examine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an areaNot all historical buildings am attractive. However, them may be other reasons - for example. economic reasons - why they should be preserved. So. let us assume that historical buildings are both attractive andimportant to the majority of people. What should we do then if a new building is needed?

In my view. new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style. Indeed, there are many examples in my own hometown of Tours where modern designs have been placed very successfully nextto old buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not dominate (影响) its surroundingstoo much, it often improves the attractiveness of the area.

It is true that then arc examples of new buildings which have spoilt (破坏) the area they are in, but thesame can be said of some old buildings too. Yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas. Ithink this is simply because people are normally conservative (保守的) and do not like change.

Although we have to respect people's feelings as fellow users of the buildings. I believe that it is the dulyof the architect and planner to move things forward. If we always reproduced what war there before, we wouldall still be living in caves. Thus, I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choosesomething fresh and different, even though that might be the name risky choice.

A. Some old buildings have spoilt the area they are in.

B. We should reproduce the same old buildings.

C. Buildings should not dominate their surroundings.

D. No one understands why people speak against new buildings.

30. By "most things forward" in the last paragraph. the author probably means

A. destroy old buildings

B. put things in a different place

C. choose new architectural style

D. respect people's feelings for historical buildings

31. What is the main purpose of the passage?

A. To explain why people dislike change.

B. To argue that modern buildings can be both in historic areas.

C. To warn that we could end up living in caves.

D. To admit how new buildings have mined their surroundings.

D
